Tips to Improve Home Cleaning

Improving home cleaning starts with organization. Instead of dedicating an entire day to cleaning, set up a weekly schedule. Dividing the rooms across the week makes cleaning more manageable.

Create a chart that lists every room and the time each one requires. For example:

  • Daily tasks: washing dishes, making the bed, sweeping.
  • Weekly tasks: changing sheets and towels, deep mopping floors.
  • Even if it seems obvious, take care of certain chores immediately. Don’t postpone what you can do right away make the bed after waking up, wash dishes after each meal, and wipe down the bathroom after every shower, among others.
  • Keep only the items you actually need. Avoid accumulating unused objects that merely take up space and lengthen cleaning time. The fewer items you have, the easier and faster it is to clean and organize.
  • Use microfiber cloths for dusting, as they trap dust better than other materials. Always dust from top to bottom, moving from higher to lower surfaces.
  • The kitchen is one of the rooms where most dirt accumulates. To avoid major deep cleans, wipe up messes daily. The refrigerator is notoriously hard to clean, so wipe away buildup each day and toss expired products. A handy trick: place the most used and soon to expire items at the front and in plain sight. Likewise, the dishwasher should be cleaned once a week so food residue doesn’t build up, preventing bigger issues.
  • The bathroom is another area where cleanliness is crucial. It requires daily attention. Use vinegar for everyday cleaning, and bleach once a week for deeper disinfection.
  • Avoid piling up laundry and set specific days for running the washing machine. This saves money and time and helps you stay organized. Laundry day can coincide with changing sheets and towels to prevent a backlog. Both should ideally be changed once a week.
  • Sweeping the entire house is a task that should be done daily. Don’t wait until dust bunnies appear or the floor looks dirty. If you prefer vacuuming, do so once or twice a week, and mop at the same frequency. One cleaning hack: wrap the broom in a nylon stocking or a special cover to create static electricity that attracts dust and lint though, whenever possible, a vacuum is more effective.
